ajthefourth: Backtracking a bit, Mawaru Penguindrum‘s cold open this week is dedicated to reminding us that Shouma was hit by a car in episode eight. Fortunately, Shouma appears to be physically unharmed; however, the consequences of his car accident, and the way that episode nine played with the audience’s perception of Himari’s character cast a very interesting shadow over this tenth episode of the series. ajthefourth: If this episode made anything clear, it’s that some of its characters are alive, and some of them are dead. The question, of course, is which characters are in which state of being?
ajthefourth: Amidst the whirlwind of colors, transformations, violence, and sexual imagery that engulfs the viewer in the fifth episode of Mawaru Penguindrum, it’s easy to overlook the fact that this episode continues its subtle development of the Takakura brothers and their relationship.
“But how are you going to be normal again if you keep playing with these illusions?!”
ajthefourth: In an episode that focused mainly on Ringo and a bit of her background story, it was this quote above that stood out the most in this latest Mawaru Penguindrum episode. Up until this third episode, the series has focused solely on the brothers through their quest to save Himari’s life. We’ve managed to learn a little about Kanba and Shouma, all through off-handed remarks or seemingly throw away lines that have slowly begun to divine their separate characters.
ajthefourth: The phrase above, in addition to being humorous, is a tagline for this second episode of Mawaru Penguindrum given to us by the blue and pink haired girl icons on the train. It encapsulates the entire episode as a whole, which begins as a seemingly harmless romp where the two twins follow a girl from a different high school, Ringo Oginome, having been told that she may have the penguindrum.
