Ouma Shu with a Thousand Faces: Guilty Crown and the Hero’s Journey

"Wait, you mean, I-I'm the protagonist?"

Guilty Crown has taken a lot of criticism since it began airing for falling into the trap of having beautiful production values, but a hollow story at its core. It has made the series highly entertaining to watch, although perhaps not in the same way as the creators had intended, since most of the entertainment comes from unintentional hilarity when the series decides to take itself seriously. This was none so apparent as in Episode 12 of Guilty Crown, where the series attempts to pull off a tried and true storytelling device and fails miserably.

Colloquium: Mawaru Penguindrum Episode 13

“It really was a day like any other
We had breakfast together in the morning.
The three of us went to school.
Our parents went to work.
We smiled by the door and waved.
But they never came back.
That was the last time we were together as a family.”

Colloquium: Mawaru Penguindrum Episode 9

"Survival strategy!"

“Like I said, the apple is the universe itself.  A universe in the palm of your hand.  It’s what connects this world and the other world.”

“The other world?”

The Bravery and Brillance of Dantalian no Shoka Episode 3

"Kashira, kashira, gozonji kashira?"

Dantalian no Shoka and I have a rocky relationship.  Upon watching the first episode, the only thing that struck me about the series was the question of how something that was so beautiful to look at and listen to could have such uninspired dialogue.

Due to this somewhat crippling handicap, the series has been hard for me to immerse myself in, which is unfortunate because, if the series excels at anything it’s creating a haunting and beautiful atmosphere.  However, it’s hard to envelop one’s self in an atmosphere when the dialogue is clunky and straightforward, jarring the viewer out of their lovely suspension of disbelief.
