ajthefourth: It was in episode five, when their parents were introduced, that the Takakura brothers really began to cement themselves as separate entities in viewers’ minds.  Kanba was the more active one.  He took after his father, who was also a man of action.  Shouma, on the other hand, took after his mother.  He was more domestic, emotionally messy, and a bit of a worrywart.  In this episode, Shouma takes action, although hardly in the same way as his brother would have.

Colloquium: Mawaru Penguindrum Episode 3

“I know you get bored when you’re home alone…”

“But how are you going to be normal again if you keep playing with these illusions?!”

ajthefourth: In an episode that focused mainly on Ringo and a bit of her background story, it was this quote above that stood out the most in this latest Mawaru Penguindrum episode. Up until this third episode, the series has focused solely on the brothers through their quest to save Himari’s life.  We’ve managed to learn a little about Kanba and Shouma, all through off-handed remarks or seemingly throw away lines that have slowly begun to divine their separate characters.

Colloquium: Mawaru Penguindrum Episode 1

"Because, ever since that day, none of us had a future."

ajthefourth: There’s something inherently fascinating and romantic about train travel.  The idea that a train stops at numerous destinations, offering numerous possibilities and yet is unable to expand beyond where its rails take it is one that makes the train an excellent image to work with in regards to themes of life and death.  Rife with train imagery, Mawaru Penguindrum is the latest anime series to address these themes and it does so with confidence, style, and substance. Existentialism in the Execution of Sora no Woto

When I watched the final OVA, I don’t think I realized quite how much I missed this show. Beautiful art, beautiful music, insightful dialogue discussing dreams vs. goals, and the cutest haircut session ever.
